In the warmer months, there is no better feeling then stepping in from the heat on a summer’s day and feeling the rush of cold air from an air conditioner in your home or office. And as you sit there and absorb the refreshing air, you may even be able to see your electricity bill climbing by the second. But there is no avoiding it as many people nowadays consider air conditioning to be a necessity. While there may not be very many alternatives to air conditioning, there are ways to reduce the costs associated with cooling your home.
The first line of defense against exorbitant utility bills is by setting the thermostat to a temperature that is comfortable but not too cool. The higher you are able to set the temperature the less you will pay in electric bills. This is a tip you can use whether you have an energy efficient air conditioner or not. Energy saving air conditioners are becoming increasingly popular but many people have not yet converted their units.
Many people did take advantage of the federal tax credit that was made available under The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 which provided tax credits to people who purchased an energy efficient cooling system. As a result people were motivated to upgrade their existing cooling systems and in addition to saving money on their utility bills, were also able to take advantage of the tax credit.
Air conditioners that you can install in your window come in energy efficient options and are a good choice if you live in a large home but spend a lot of time in only one or two rooms. As opposed to cooling down the entire house, you can limit the air conditioning to a section of the house thereby decreasing costs. If you purchase an energy saving air conditioning unit then you will save even more.
If you live in a home and use most of the rooms most of the time, then a central air conditioning unit may serve you well. If you do have one, make sure that it is still operating efficiently, as they tend to lose some of their functionality as they get older. Newer models offer energy saving features. These may cost more than traditional units initially but over time they should pay for themselves many times over through reduced energy bills.
So depending on your home and where you spend the majority of your time you will want to decide between these two options. Once you decide on the type of air conditioning system that you would prefer, you will want to look at the energy efficient options and decide on the one that will work best in your home. The amount that you can save on your electric bills each month may surprise you but don’t wait any longer. Start saving. There is no reason why you have to pay more than necessary to get the air conditioning that you want in the summer.
